Saksham Yadav, world champion weightlifter, dies after road accident

first_imgWorld champion Saksham Yadav succumbed to his injuries on Sunday evening at the AIIMS Trauma Centre in New Delhi.Saksham Yadav was admitted in an “extremely critical” condition at the AIIMS Trauma Centre after a car he was travelling in met with an accident in the early hours on Sunday.Five men, including Saksham, have died while one other person continues to battle for life after their car met with an accident near the Delhi-Haryana border.”He died at 6:38 pm of a cardiac arrest,” a senior doctor at the Trauma Centre said, adding that “the family told us that he was revived twice at the Max Hospital”.The accident took place at around 4 a.m. near Alipur village, close to Delhi’s Singhu border with Haryana.The victims were on the Delhi-Panipat highway in a Swift Dzire car which police believe was being driven at high speed although fog had drastically reduced visibility.Saksham had sustained grievous head injuries and severe internal bleeding.Saksham, who won a gold medal in the 2017 world weightlifting championship for India, was seriously injured along with another weightlifter, Rohit, 19, a police official said.Both men were rushed to Max Hospital in Delhi’s Shalimar Bagh. Yadav was later shifted to AIIMS, where breathed his last.According to police, the driver lost control of the speeding vehicle that first hit a road divider and then a pole.Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Rajneesh Gupta said, the other deceased were identified as Tikamchand, Saurabh, Akash and Harish Roy.It was Rohit’s birthday and the friends were out celebrating it, the police said.advertisementThe police are also probing whether it is a case of drunken driving since some liquor bottles were found in the vehicle.(With inputs from PTI)last_img read more
