Fall Fun

first_imgIn the past, you have heard my concern over athletics not being fun for kids any more.  Many sport leagues are so intense these days that young athletes get burned out before they ever reach high school. The Batesville Babe Ruth League is offering a fun activity this fall that involves baseball and softball.  The games will be played during September and October and will be made available for athletes who want to have some fun recreation on weekends.  Games will be scheduled when enough athletes are available to compete.  They will be making every effort to avoid any conflicts with those students who are involved in a school sport.  No pressure will be placed on those participating. If the League is able to accomplish this goal, it will allow the athletes some fun time and will also give them some extra practice for next years summer leagues.  I think it just might work.last_img read more

McDowell ‘excited’ to be in the mix

first_img McDowell made his tournament debut when Fota Island last hosted the event in 2002 and finished 27th, but that was one of just six halfway cuts the former US Open champion has made in 12 appearances. The 34-year-old has never recorded a top-10 finish, but added a 66 to his opening 68 to join England’s Robert Rock in the clubhouse lead on eight under par. Press Association “There’s always a first time for everything,” joked McDowell, who carded six birdies and one bogey. “Eight under is a nice total and although I don’t expect it to be leading at the end of the day it doesn’t have to. I am just excited to be in contention.” McDowell admitted he was feeling the effects of last week’s exertions in the US Open in the first round, hitting his tee shot on the par-three 17th so poorly that it came up more than 50 yards short of the green. “I was a little sharper this morning, legs felt fresher,” he added. “I missed two fairways, my iron play was better and I putted well. The Irish Open brings its own pressure, but it’s the proverbial walk in the park compared to last week, which bordered on the unenjoyable. I’m more relaxed, trying to free myself up and enjoy my golf.” Starting from the 10th, McDowell began with three pars before holing from 20 feet for birdie on the par-three 11th, only to promptly give the shot back on the next after failing to get up and down from a greenside bunker. Joint second after the opening round at Pinehurst before finishing 28th, McDowell bounced back straight away with a birdie on the 15th and then made three in succession from the second. And, after surprisingly missing from six feet on the fifth, he holed from a similar distance on the seventh to match the 66 of tournament specialist Rock, who had carded seven birdies and two bogeys. Rock lost a play-off to Shane Lowry at County Louth in 2009, but claimed the first prize of 500,000 euros as Lowry was still an amateur, while he also finished fifth in 2006 and second to Paul Casey last year. “It’s a tournament I like playing, but I think it’s more the time of year,” Rock said. “I enjoy the tournaments at the start of the year (he held off Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy to win in Abu Dhabi in 2012) but when we travel further afield I don’t play well and it batters your confidence. “It takes time to rebuild that and it seems to be this time of year it comes back.” Defending champion Casey had been trading birdies with playing partner McDowell until bogeys on his last three holes meant he had to settle for a second consecutive 69. center_img Graeme McDowell admitted it was a pleasant surprise to be in contention for the Irish Open after moving into a share of the lead on Friday.last_img read more

More than 3,000 surgeries cancelled by Letterkenny Hospital since 2014

first_imgA total of 3,300 In-Patient and Day Case surgical procedures have been cancelled by authorities at Letterkenny University Hospital since 2014.Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Deputy Pearse Doherty has condemned the HSE figures.Describing the numbers as ‘totally unacceptable’, the Donegal T.D. is now calling on the Minister for Health to outline what steps will be taken to reduce the problem of hospital cancellations and to ensure that patients here are not being denied access to treatments. He fumed “Prior to the Dáil Summer recess I raised the issue of surgical procedure cancellations with the Minister for Health and I challenged him to provide information on the number of surgeries which have been forced to be cancelled over the last few years.“I’ve now received those statistics from the HSE and the figures do not make for pleasant reading.“They reveal that between 2014 and August this year, there have been 425 In-Patient admissions cancelled by Letterkenny hospital while – during the same period – management at the hospital have had to cancel a further 2,875 Day-Patient surgeries.“This means that over the past five and half years, the hospital has cancelled a total of 3,300 surgical procedures for its patients – that is totally unacceptable and wrong.” The Donegal politician said he understood operations may have to be cancelled for any number of reasons however these figures highlight the sensitivity of the system. He added “Insufficient capacity, hospital outbreaks, staffing shortages, etc., all impact on surgery scheduling and if one link in the chain is missing then the whole system effectively collapses.“Worryingly however is that behind every one of those stats is an individual: a patient who is in need of care yet is being denied access to timely treatment.“Similarly, the hospital continues to experience significant challenges with delayed discharges, something which is being exacerbated by the ongoing shortage of Home Help hours.“As a result, patients who have been deemed to be medically fit to be discharged from the hospital have nowhere to go and must remain in the acute setting while they wait on home care supports to be made available.” All of these different factors are having a negative impact on the space available for elective procedures and this is why we are seeing such a huge number of operations being cancelled or rescheduled by the hospital, he added.“Evidently through not having properly resourced health services such as In-Home Support packages, as well as overseeing a recruitment embargo across the health system, the Government and the Minister have created this situation.“Regrettably, patients are suffering as a result of Government inaction and ineptitude and moreover they are being denied access to timely care.“As the Dáil is set to resume in the coming weeks, I intend to ask Minister Harris what measures he now plans to take to address these challenges facing the hospital and to seriously tackle the problem of patients having surgical procedures cruelly cancelled through no fault of their own.” More than 3,000 surgeries cancelled by Letterkenny Hospital since 2014 was last modified: August 29th, 2019 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:cancelleddonegalhospitalOperationsPearse Dohertysurgerieslast_img read more

Top 10 Most Exciting Web Apps or Services

first_img9. Wolfram|Alpha: Ever since Wolfram|Alpha’s admittedly much hyped launch in May, we’ve been tracking this innovative product closely. It’s a self-described “computational knowledge engine” and while it’s not quite the Google killer some predicted, it has many potential uses – which makes it an exciting app to follow for us.10. Pubsubhubbub: With a name harder to say that ‘ReadWriteWeb,’ this new Google Code project has excited the web development community. It’s not a product, but a protocol. The project page describes it as a “simple, open, server-to-server web-hook-based pubsub (publish/subscribe) protocol as an extension to Atom (and RSS).” In laymans terms, it delivers your RSS feeds to you much quicker – in near real time. To understand the context of Pubsubhubbub and similar exciting initiatives more, read Marshall Kirkpatrick’s fine analysis of Distributed Social Networking. There you have it, the top 10 most exciting web apps and services according to the ReadWriteWeb community! Let us know your further thoughts in the comments. Here is the full list, a snapshot taken when the original post had 66 comments (sans links, but Google – or Bing – any app that catches your eye).Twitter 25Gmail 17Google Reader 11Google Wave 11Facebook 6Blip.fm 4Dropbox 4Hootsuite 4Wolfram Alpha 4Pubsubhubbub 3Scribd 3Seesmic 3Spotify 3WordPress 3Apture 2Boxee 2Delicious 2Flickr 2foursquare 2getsatisfaction 2Google 2last.fm 2PixelPipe 2Posterous 2Skype 2TweetDeck 2Xmarks 2Appboy Bespin Bit.ly Bloom Brightkite Caspio chi.mp Cliqset Deezer Digg Dizzler Dopplr Edmodo Evernote Feedly FriendFeed Gmail chat GMX Mail Google Analytics Google Analytics API Google APIs Google Docs Google insight Google Maps Google Notebook Google Voice Hype Machine Instant XRay Instapaper iWantMyName JaJah JobTitled Jolicloud Jott justbought.it Know Thy Congressman kreeo Lala Layar LinkedIn metafilter mint MobileMe My Name is E Nanovor Newsmap.jp Pachube Parade Peoplebrowsr PocketSmith Ponoko PopUrls Prezi Primal Fusion Salesforce Shapeways SocialText SoundCloud Sweetcron Tarpipe TimeXchange.net Tracer Tumblr tweetworks Twitterfall urtak W3C QA Toolbox XCODE Youtube Cat pic: Mr.Thomas Tags:#Features#Lists#Product Reviews#web richard macmanus A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Related Posts Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Yesterday we asked what 3 web apps or services you find the most exciting right now. Not your 3 most used or favorite, but the apps that currently make you tingly with excitement. We got some great responses in the comments, so in this post we pick out our top 10 from your choices. We’ve chosen the 10 in two batches. Firstly, the services that got the most number of mentions. As expected, these are well known apps that millions of people are using (or will use when it’s launched, in the case of Google Wave). We didn’t want this to be purely a popularity contest though, so we’ve also selected 5 lesser known web apps or services. Those apps all got multiple mentions and in our estimation they’re each worthy of being labeled ‘exciting.’ Note: we offer the full list of apps voted for at the bottom of this post. Top 5 Apps1. Twitter 25 votes2. Gmail 17 votes3. Google Reader 11 votes4. Google Wave 11 votes5. Facebook 6 votesThis was fairly predictable, with Twitter well out in front. There’s been such excitement and activity around Twitter this year, that nobody could really argue against Twitter being the most exciting web or service around in 2009.Twitter was followed by no less than 3 Google products, one of them as yet unreleased! (Google Wave). This shows that Google still has that aura of being ‘exciting,’ at least with ReadWriteWeb’s early adopter readers. Facebook slipped in at number 5, so it too seems to have kept up its reputation for being innovative.Top 5 Lesser Known Apps6. Spotify (RWW coverage): this Swedish online music app is about to launch in the U.S. and is highly anticipated by that market. It’s so exciting that we’ve predicted it may even threaten Apple’s near monopoly iTunes product. We’ll have to wait and see what happens on that front, but Spotify certainly has a lot of people salivating! Other online music services mentioned multiple times in our poll were Blip.fm and last.fm.7. Dropbox: this was listed as one of ReadWriteWeb’s 5 Favorite Online Storage Services in September last year. At the time it had only just opened to the public, but it has since gained many fans. Its integration with the desktop is perhaps the most exciting feature of this product. Other features we like are the sharing of folders and preservation of every revision of every file.8. Seesmic: A number of Twitter clients were mentioned, like Hootsuite and TweetDeck. But one which has impressed us a lot in recent months has been Seesmic. In July we reported that Seesmic, previously only a desktop client, had released a web-based version and a new version of the Seesmic desktop. The web-based version of Seesmic recreates most of the features that are currently available in the desktop application. Our own Frederic Lardinois listed Seesmic Web as one of his 3 most exciting apps.last_img read more

10 Reasons Social Selling Is Failing

first_imgSocial Selling isn’t living up to its promise. Those promises have been exaggerated and oversold. Social selling is failing.Lack of Content: Your social selling program isn’t going to work without content. You may want to make noise on the social channels, and you may want attention. You can’t have attention without content. Salespeople without content are unarmed.Link Bait Content Isn’t Content: You see some social gurus and sales experts writing provocative content. If it’s not link bait, it’s comment bait designed to drive engagement simply by being provocative. If you want attention from your peer group, you’ll get it. You are not, however, gaining engaged prospects.Content Doesn’t Compel Change: Infographics are really neat. So are inspirational images. And quotes. But they do absolutely nothing to explain to your dream client what’s going on in their world, why they are plagued with dissonance, and why they should change.Too Great a Reliance on Content to Drive Leads: Content marketing is not going to generate enough leads for you to make your number unless you are the rare exception,  a thought leader with an earned following. Inbound marketing isn’t supposed to provide you with 100 percent of your leads, plus the amount you need to make your number.Too Much Faith That Connecting Is Enough: You need to open relationships. You can do that on the social web. The barrier for someone to accept your LinkedIn connection request might now be lower than a friend request on Facebook. Prospecting means asking for a meeting.Too Much Time Spent on Social Channels: It is a complete and utter Time suck. Perhaps the greatest time suck and distraction in the history of mankind, approaching levels that exceed television. It is critical that you use the tools. And then it is critical that you set the tools down and do the work you really need to do. If you believe social is urgent and important, you are making a mistake.Belief That Social Replaces Traditional Approaches: Social fails when it is used as a replacement for the traditional approaches. You InMail isn’t prospecting. It is approaching  spammy.Activities Are Not Strategic: Sharing other people’s content is great. Liking and commenting is great, too. Posting status updates can be a great way to share with people you are connected to on social. It just isn’t strategic. If what you are doing doesn’t create value for your prospects and clients, it’s not strategic.Lack of an Integrated Approach and Campaigns: What story are you telling with what you publish and share? What is the end goal? How is it aligned with a campaign that is a tailored message designed to move your dream clients to a place where they are willing and interested in engaging in a conversation around change?Shift in Platforms Away from B2B: Name all the great social platforms for B2B? If you named SnapChat, you’re just being funny. If you said Instagram, you’re teasing me. LinkedIn is the only platform for professionals, and it looks more like Facebook every day.If salespeople and sales organization are going to use the social tools to generate sales, we’re going to have to do a whole lot better.last_img read more

Gopinath Munde most likely to join Congress

first_imgBJP leader Gopinath Munde appears to be all set to join the Congress. He met Congress leaders Ahmed Patel and Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan late on Tuesday night and was expected to meet party chief Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday.Union Minister and former Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has been playing a major role in bringing Munde to the Congress.Headlines Today accessed a video of April 2011 wherein Munde and Deshmukh are seen offering puja at the Sai Baba’s temple in Shirdi. They are seen walking into the temple and then having a darshan of Sai Baba’s mausoleum. The BJP has been trying to placate Munde, who is unhappy about being sidelined by party president Nitin Gadkari, his rival in Maharashtra politics.Gadkari was junior to Munde in state politics. After he took over as BJP president, Munde’s clout went down in the party.Munde arrived in Delhi from Mumbai on Tuesday night but has not met any of the BJP’s central leaders, including L.K. Advani. There is a feeling in the BJP camp that Munde appears to have come to the conclusion that his grievances were unlikely to be resolved.”Munde appears to have made up his mind to go to the Congress,” PTI quoted a senior BJP leader as saying.- With PTI inputsFor more news on India, click here. For more news on Business, click here. For more news on Movies, click here. For more news on Sports, click here.last_img read more
