The Eastern States Exposition is “New England’s Great State Fair.” It is the largest agricultural event on the east coast, held in West Springfield, Mass. The fair includes something from every New England state.Students attending were Ann Shelby, Mariah Cox, Nathaneal Freeman, and Olivia Pflaumer. Their day started early Friday morning, with a plane ride out to Boston, Mass. The students were able to explore Boston by going to Old North Church, walking the freedom trail, visiting the Boston Science Museum, and eating at an incredible Italian restaurant. It was a long day exploring Boston with their competition the next day, so everyone headed back to their hotel in Springfield to be ready in the morning.On Saturday morning the Food Science competition started at 8:30 and was set to end at noon. Students were expected to complete a written test, triangle test, aroma identification, customer inquiry, product development, and a few more. After the contest, the Zane Trace FFA members were able to see what the Big E had to offer. They spent most of their time exploring the replica state houses that had every the state was about inside. Later that day, a banquet was held to announce the results of the CDE competitions. Kolkata: In a bid to control overspeeding by errant drivers across the city, Kolkata Police will soon install speed cameras in 40 locations, whereas Red Light Violation Detector (RLVD) cameras will be installed at 100 more locations.According to sources, speed cameras are installed at 21 locations across the Kolkata Police jurisdiction at present, which have been successful in prosecuting drivers violating the speed restriction norms. These speed cameras were installed after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the Safe Drive Save Life (SDSL) campaign, which is being followed strictly till date. The installing spots have been earmarked and soon the installation work will start. Speed cameras are able to take snapshots of vehicle registration plates, even in the dark. The data is being fed to the central traffic database, from where citation cases are being sent to the vehicle owners via SMS. After those got operational, the number of signal violations has come down significantly. Our appeal to the citizens is to please follow the road norms for both drivers and pedestrians to stay safe,” said Pandey Santosh, Deputy Commissioner (Traffic) of Kolkata Police. Recently, Banerjee informed through Twitter that the number of road accidents has reduced by 12 percent across the city in 2018, compared to 2017. According to police sources, after commencing the SDSL campaign, several attempts by Kolkata Police were successful in curbing road accidents. Among them, a special drive against violation of speed regulations was an important one. In several places traffic guards could be seen conducting speed check using speed gun and prosecuting the errant drivers. After taking over the charge of Commissioner of Police (CP), Kolkata, Anuj Sharma has also stated that traffic would be one of the important issues on which he wants to emphasize. According to sources, a few days after taking charge as the CP, Kolkata, Sharma instructed the traffic officials to conduct an inquiry for each of the accidents to find the cause and the way to curb accidents in the said area during a review meeting. He even asked the senior officials to visit the accident spot and submit a report on the same.
NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is planning to burn the 2014 manifesto of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on March 13 for failing to honour the promises mentioned in it. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal alleged that both the BJP and the Congress had promised of statehood for Delhi but never acted on it.Arvind Kejriwal claimed that if Delhi is granted full statehood, the government can create lakhs of government jobs. “We are saying to the people of Delhi that you have tested the Congress and BJP. Give us seven MPs this time and we will get full statehood for Delhi,” Kejriwal said in February. However, he postponed the strike in the wake of of the tensions between India and Pakistan over the airstrike conducted by the IAF. Kolkata: The English and Comparative Literature departments of Jadavpur University (JU) have disapproved the recommendations of the expert committee and have decided to admit students in the undergraduate level only on the basis of marks scored in entrance test.The two-member admission committee formed by JU had recommended admission with 50 percent weightage on admission test and another 50 percent on the marks scored in higher secondary or equivalent examination. This was decided at the meeting of the admission committee for humanities on Thursday,” said Subhasish Biswas, chairperson of the committee. The English and Comparative Literature departments have been conducting admission tests for decades and after the problem with admission process, they had to revert back to the 50:50 formula in 2018. “Now, they have decided to admit students only on the basis of marks in the admission test. The decision of the meeting will be placed before the executive committee (EC), whose meeting is scheduled for next week,” a member of the admission committee said. In 2018, that there were allegations of improper evaluation of answer scripts of History and the varsity had to conduct re-evaluation with external academicians. A total number of 15 candidates, who were on the waiting list after the earlier evaluation, made it to the selection list after re-evaluation. A total of 344 scripts were re-evaluated. The merit list for admission was prepared on the basis of the 50:50 system. The varsity had then formed a two-member panel to come up with recommendations for admission. The panel had presented the same to Vice-Chancellor Suranjan Das in February. It may be mentioned that state Education minister Partha Chatterjee has said that all the departments at JU should follow a standardised admission process. It should be either on the basis of marks or on the basis of admission test.
